Man Utd Down & Out, of UEFA Cup Too

Sad day for United fans, not only were the supposed to beat Benfica and qualify to the knock out stage of the Champions League, but in a way pay tribute to George Best too. It was against Benfica that Best won the European Cup in 1968 and on the ground upon which the Portuguese giant's current stadium is built where he enjoyed his finest hour and a half, the stunning 5-1 triumph two years earlier.

All United needed was a draw, as a goal by Guayre for Villarreal was enough to beat Lille. Scholes did give United a dream start but they weren’t able to build on the momentum, horrible football if you think about it, with all that talent in there, they weren’t able to beat a team who are as strong as West Bromwich Albion (Premiership) on paper.

Man Utd failed to finish even 3rd in a group which they should have led from the beginning, and hence failed to claim a UEFA Cup spot too. The defeat also costs Malcolm Glazer up to £15million in prize-money and leaves one of Europe’s biggest & richest clubs with no European combat to look forward to after the New Year for the first time in a decade.

Chelsea is most likely to draw one of the following

(Order Easiest to Toughest Opponent according to me)

  • Villarreal (Spain)
  • Lyon (France)
  • Inter Milan (Italy)
  • AC Milan (Italy)
  • Barcelona (Spain)
  • Juventus (Italy)

Rules:

Can't Play Club from same League (Country) or Group (Champions League).

Winner of a group plays Runners up of another Group

1st Game at Runners up’s home Ground

The draw takes place on Friday, December 16th
