Frustrated Madrid Sack Luxemburgo

Talks of Real Madrid coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo being sacked had already emerged after his team was humiliated at their own home ground by Barcelona, two draws after that against Lyon and Real Sociedad just made things worse. The straw that broke the camel’s back was their unimpressive non-entertaining win against Getafe, the club came to a conclusion Luxemburgo had to go.

The 53-year-old Brazilian, who was Real's fifth coach in the space of two and a half years, was dismissed following an emergency board meeting at the club's Bernabeu stadium. There is now likely to be a furious race to replace Luxemburgo, with former Lyon coach Paul Le Guen believed to be under consideration, while Real president Florentino Perez is a fan of Premiership bosses Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger. Juventus coach Fabio Capello, who led Real to the league title in 1997, former Celta Vigo and Porto boss Victor Fernandez, England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson and Liverpool's Rafael Benitez have all been mooted as possible long-term replacements for Luxemburgo.

Mourinho had this to say "I would not go if they called me, I have four more years at Chelsea and I hope to win enough trophies in that time to see out my contract and maybe longer."

Perez also admires the coaching skills of Fabio Capello, who has already had one spell at the Bernabeu, but the Juventus chief has played down a return to the club.

"I'm flattered by this link because Real aren't a small club, But I have a contract and I'm happy here." Capello told Sky Italia.

Luxemburgo leaves the team in fourth place in the standings with 25 points from 14 games, six behind joint leaders Barcelona and Osasuna. Real have also booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

The club then spent nearly 90 million euros ($105.3 million) in reconstructing the squad during the close season, bringing in Brazilian strikers Robinho and Julio Baptista, the promising Spanish international defender Sergio Ramos and Uruguayan duo Pablo Garcia and Carlos Diogo.

I think Arsene Wenger is most likely to take up the position of Head Coach; talks of him leaving for Madrid had surfaced about a week back. Arsenal were out classed by Bolton in their recent Premiership fixture and things don’t seem to be going all that good in the Arsenal locker room, if Wenger does leave for Madrid, I’m quite sure he would be taking Henry with him. Henry has already been linked with a move to Spain for quite sometime.
